India captain Rohit Sharma played down his furious reaction to the horrible mix-up with Shubman Gill that resulted in his run-out for 0 in the first T20I against Afghanistan in Mohali on Thursday, January 11. Rohit did not hold back as he lashed out at Gill while walking back to the pavilion without troubling the scorers in their successful chase of 159 at the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium. | IND vs AFG, 1st T20I Scorecard |

Rohit Sharma was uncharacteristically livid as he turned back and had a go at Shubman Gill after getting run-out as early as the first over of the Indian chase on a cold evening in Mohali. Both Rohit and Gill ended up at the non-striker’s end after the India captain, on his return to T20Is after 14 months, showed aggression by hitting left-arm pacer Fazalhaq Farooqi down the ground after skipping down the pitch. Gill was seen watching the ball rather than listening to the call for a run from his captain.

Shubman Gill tried to put behind the mix-up and took the attack to the Afghanistan bowlers in the powerplay, hitting a 12-ball 23. However, he was not able to convert his start into a big knock as he was out stumped by spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman as early as the 4th over.

” Honestly these things happen. When it happens you feel frustrated because you want to be out there and score runs for your team. Wanted Gill to carry on. He played a good innings but got out,” Rohit Sharma said after India’s 6-wicket win in the series opener against Afghanistan.

In the end, the Indian camp was all smiles as Shivam Dube’s unbeaten 60 off 40 balls and Jitesh Sharma’s quick cameo of 30 helped India ease past the finish line in just 17.3 overs.

Tilak Varma played a good hand in his 44-run stand with Shivam Dube after India lost both Rohit and Gill in the powerplay. Jitesh, who was promoted to No. 5, made the most of his opportunity, playing an aggressive knock that helped ease the scoreboard pressure.

Dube won the Player of the Match Award for his all-round show. The Chennai Super Kings all-rounder hit 60 off 40 after picking up a wicket in his miserly 2-over spell. Axar Patel also shone on his return to T20Is, picking up 2 wickets for just 22 runs in his 4-over quota.

Rinku Singh was also there at the end when Dube hit the winning runs, chipping in with a quick-fire 16 amid his growing reputation as a finisher.

“Lot of positives – Shivam Dube, the way Jitesh batted, Tilak as well and obviously Rinku,” Rohit added.

Inida will look to take an unbeatable lead in the 3-match series when they meet Afghanistan in the 2nd T20I in Indore on Sunday. With only 2 more matches to go before the T20 World Cup in June in the international stage, the young guns will be looking to impress again on Sunday.
