India snap 5-match losing streak in SENA countries with a historic victory in Cape Town


India defeated South Africa in the second and final match of the Test series in Cape Town on Thursday, 4 January. The Indian team, under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, drew the 2-match series level after losing the first game by an innings and 32 runs.

The win in Cape Town meant that India snapped their 5-match losing streak in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia), which began in January 2022. India had begun their losing streak back in January 2022 losing 2 Test matches against South Africa. Since then they lost against England in Birmingham in 2022, and then against Australia in the WTC Final at The Oval in London. India lost the first Test match of the 2023/24 series as well against South Africa – making it 5 losses in a row for the side.

It took a Herculean effort for the Indian side to come back from the innings defeat in Centurion. India bowlers dominated the show in a treacherous pitch at Cape Town and helped India register a 7-wicket victory.

Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah ran riot in either innings against South Africa and finished with 15 wickets between themselves. Mohammed Siraj won the player of the match award for his riveting 7/46 in Cape Town. This was also the first time in India’s Test history that they won a game in Cape Town.

India captain Rohit Sharma lauded the South African team after the 2nd Test and said that India were not able to win the Test series because South Africa were a great team. Rohit added that SA always challenged the Indian team when the visit the country and was glad to play here.

The India captain also congratulated Dean Elgar for a fantastic Test career and wished him the best for the next phase of his career.
